EYRC Training Program: 14th interview, with Dr. Linus Haberbosch

On behalf of the EYRC, Dr Mario Detomas interviewed Dr Linus Haberbosch during the Annual Meeting of the German Society of Endocrinology (DGE), held in Baden-Baden in March 2025. Dr Haberbosch is the newly appointed Head of the Pituitary Unit at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, one of the leading reference centres for pituitary diseases in Europe. In this interview, Dr Haberbosch shared with us his perspective on the current challenges and opportunities in pituitary medicine, as well as his personal journey as a clinician scientist. He gave valuable advice for young endocrinologists on how to develop a career in the field, how to navigate the academic and clinical environment, and how to find balance between professional and personal life. It was a true pleasure to interview Dr Linus Haberbosch, and we hope that his experience and insights will inspire and support young clinician scientists in their own career paths in Endocrinology!

 

EYRC Training Program: 13th interview, with Prof. Martin Reincke

On behalf of the EYRC, Dr Pedro Marques interviewed Professor Martin Reincke during the Annual Congress of the Portuguese Society of Endocrinology in 30 January – 2 February 2025, in Porto, Portugal. Professor Martin Reincke is a well-known Professor of Endocrinology and the current Head of the Department of Medicine IV, University Hospital Munich. Prof Reincke has also been the previous president of the European Society of Endocrinology. His academic interests mainly consist of the pathogenesis and management of endocrine tumors, with a great focus on pituitary and adrenal, and in specific conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome and hyperaldosteronism. In this interview, Prof. Martin Reincke started by highlighting to us the main developments in the diagnostic and management of Cushing’s syndrome. Then, Prof Martin Reincke further shared with us some advice on how to become a world leader academic professor of Neuroendocrinology, and how to find a good balance between professional and personal life. And remember, always ask yourself and your beloved ones if you are doing enough or too much! EYRC Training Program: 12th interview, with Prof. Anton Luger

On behalf of the EYRC, Dr Pedro Marques interviewed Professor Anton Luger during the Annual Congress of the Portuguese Society of Endocrinology on 30 January – 2 February 2025, in Porto, Portugal. Professor Anton Luger is a renowned Professor of Endocrinology who worked most of his career at the Medical University of Vienna, where he served as Deputy Head, Acting Head and Head of the Clinical Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Besides his strong devotion to patient care and teaching, his main scientific interests are Pituitary, Neuroendocrinology and Diabetes. In this interview, Prof. Anton Luger discussed key aspects and challenges related with managing pituitary tumours during pregnancy, and highlighted the importance of expert multidisciplinary teams in this particular setting. Afterwards, Prof Anton Luger gave some advice to young and early career scientists and physicians with interest in neuroendocrinology on how to balance clinical and research/academic duties, and how to become a successful academic professor of Endocrinology, while keeping a good balance with private life! It was a great pleasure to interview Professor Anton Luger, and we hope that this interview helps you developing your career in the field of Pituitary and Neuroendocrinology!

 

EYRC Training Program: 11th interview, with Dr. Federico Gatto

On behalf of the EYRC, Dr. Giampaolo Trivellin interviewed Dr. Federico Gatto during the XI Annual Meeting on Pituitary Tumors that took place in Rome, Italy, on 28-29 November 2024. Federico Gatto is an Assistant Professor at Università degli Studi di Genova – Department of Internal Medicine & Medical Specialties in Genova, Italy. He is currently a member of the Executive committee (ExCo) of ENEA and a founding member of our committee, EYRC! During the interview, Dr. Gatto shared his journey from being a founding member of EYRC to his current role in the ENEA ExCo. He also discussed about the importance of EYRC in fostering young researchers and scientific collaboration and his transition to the ExCo and its impact on the ENEA community. Finally, he shared with us his groups’ latest research on somatostatin receptor expression in pituitary tumors and their ongoing study on body composition and sarcopenia in acromegaly and Cushing’s disease (references are provided at the end of the Description). It was a privilege to interview Dr. Gatto, and we hope you enjoyed listening to his interview as much as we did!

 

EYRC Training Program: Career in Progress, 1st interview, with Dr. Nicole Bechmann

We start with this video a new series of interviews with early/mid-career investigators! We hope this will help young neuroendocrinologists grow and find inspiration for setting up collaborations. For our inaugural interview, on behalf of the EYRC, Dr. Cihan Atila interviewed Dr. Nicole Bechmann shortly after the past ESE Summer School, held in Innsbruck, Austria in June 2024. Research Focus Dr. Nicole Bechmann investigates adrenal gland tumors and their role in endocrine hypertension disorders such as primary aldosteronism, Cushing’s syndrome, and pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma. Her work explores the interplay between genetics, metabolism, adrenal hormones, and sexual dimorphism to understand tumor formation and progression. Combining clinical studies with basic research, her goal is to improve diagnosis and develop better therapies for adrenal tumors. Expertise Dr. Bechmann specializes in adrenal physiology, tumor biology, and catecholamine and steroid metabolism. She utilizes advanced cell line models, including 2D, 3D, and flow-through systems, to study pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma, and adrenocortical carcinoma. Her work includes gene editing techniques like CRISPR/Cas9 for functional validation of genetic variants, studies of small molecule inhibitors, and investigations into tumor cell metabolism, migration, and invasion. These multidisciplinary approaches aim to advance our understanding of adrenal tumors and identify novel therapeutic targets. It was a pleasure to interview Dr. Bechmann, and we hope her insights will aid in developing your career!

 

EYRC Training Program: 10th interview, with Prof. Maria Chiara Zatelli

On behalf of the EYRC, Dr. Giampaolo Trivellin interviewed Professor Maria Chiara Zatelli during the European Congress of Endocrinology (ECE) that took place in Stockholm, Sweden, from 11-14 May 2024. Maria Chiara Zatelli is a Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Ferrara and Head of the Endocrine Unit at the University Hospital in Ferrara, Italy. She is currently the secretary of the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) and a founding member of our committee, EYRC! During the interview Prof. Zatelli recounted how EYRC was constituted more than 10 years ago with the official start in 2012 during the biannual congress of ENEA held in Vienna, Austria. You will hear the story of the parmigiano (yes, that’s right!) and how EYRC developed and what it has achieved since. She conclude the interview by sharing some advice for young investigators working in neuroendocrinology. It was a privilege to interview Professor Zatelli, and we hope you enjoyed listening to her interview as much as we did!

 

EYRC Training Program: 9th interview, with Prof. Ashley Grossman

On behalf of the EYRC, Dr. Pedro Marques interviewed Professor Ashley Grossman at the Annual Congress of the Portuguese Society of Endocrinology, held in Vilamoura, Portugal in February 2024. Prof. Grossman has had a distinguished career in endocrinology, primarily at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and the University of Oxford. He currently serves as a Consultant Neuroendocrine Tumour Endocrinologist at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Prof. Grossman’s academic interests focus on the pathogenesis and management of endocrine tumors, including pituitary, adrenal, and neuroendocrine tumors. During the interview, he discussed the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of Ectopic Cushing’s Syndrome, especially in differentiating it from pituitary-dependent Cushing’s Syndrome. He also addressed the impact of the global shortage of CRH on diagnosing ACTH-dependent Cushing’s Syndrome, following the cessation of production by the main worldwide supplier. Additionally, Prof. Grossman shared insights on becoming a leading academic in Neuroendocrinology and publishing in high-impact journals. It was a privilege to interview Professor Grossman, and we hope his insights will aid in developing your career in the field of Pituitary and Neuroendocrinology.

EYRC Training Program: 8th interview, with Dr. Constantine Stratakis

On behalf of EYRC, our coordinator Dr. Giampaolo Trivellin interviewed Dr. Constantine Stratakis during the 8th ENEA Workshop on Precision Pituitary Medicine that took place in Munich on 7-9 December 2023. Dr. Constantine Stratakis is the former Scientific Director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) at the NIH, in the United States and the current Director of Human Genetics and Precision Medicine at Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH), in Greece. Dr. Stratakis is an internationally known medical geneticist, pediatric endocrinologist, and translational investigator. His laboratory has identified multiple genetic defects leading to endocrine and other tumors and has described several new diseases, including the Carney-Stratakis syndrome and X-linked acrogigantism. During the interview, Dr. Stratakis discussed what he thinks are the major recent advancements in the genetics of pituitary tumors, what he enjoyed the most during his 30+ years of research and what are the challenges that geneticists face going forward. He then told us what in his opinion is a great quality that defines geneticists (spoiler: it has to do with fishermen…!) and what he would have changed during his career. He concluded by leaving us with wise words on work-life balance (young endocrinologists, make sure to follow his advice!) So, do not miss this video! EYRC Training Program: 7th interview, with Professor Thierry Brue

On behalf of the EYRC, Dr. Cihan Atila interviewed Professor Thierry Brue during the 8th ENEA Workshop on Precision Pituitary Medicine that took place in Munich on 7-9 December 2023. Thierry Brue is Professor of Endocrinology at Aix-Marseille University (AMU, Marseille, France), and endocrinologist at the Department of Endocrinology of Hôpitaux Universitaires de Marseille Conception. Prof. Brue is the coordinator of the National and European (ENDO-ERN) Rare Disease Reference Centre for Pituitary Disorders (HYPO). Since 2019, he is the Director of the Aix-Marseille University Institute for Rare Diseases, MarMaRa. Prof. Brue is also the past-President (2018-2020) of our Association. During the workshop, Prof. Brue was awarded the Rolf Gaillard Prize. This prestigious prize is awarded to a member of ENEA who had outstanding contributions to basic, translational or clinical research in the field of neuroendocrinology. In this interview, Prof. Brue summarized his plenary lecture and provided an overview of novel findings on corticotroph/ACTH deficiency, shedding light on the pivotal roles of TBX19 and TPIT based on evidence from animal models and human studies. Additionally, he delved into recent discoveries highlighting the links between corticotroph and immune deficiencies attributed to a shared genetic factor, NFKb2. Professor Brue emphasized the importance of mentorship for budding researchers, stressing the significance of cultivating both clinical and research guidance and fostering robust collaborations. As a valuable piece of advice, he recommended young researchers to broaden their perspectives by engaging in cross-institutional experiences at various research institutes. EYRC Training Program: 6th interview, with Professor Philippe Chanson

On behalf of the EYRC, Dr. Fanny Chasseloup interviewed Prof. Philippe Chanson. Prof. Chanson is a Professor of Endocrinology at Paris Saclay University. He currently works at Bicêtre Hospital (AP-HP) as a member of the Endocrinology Department. In 2018, he was awarded with the ENEA Rolf Gaillard Prize for outstanding lifetime contribution to the field of neuroendocrinology. During our conversation, Prof. Chanson discussed several exciting advances and challenges within the field of Pituitary Disease. Additionally, he shared insights into his own successful career as a clinician and researcher in neuroendocrinology. He also offered invaluable advice for young clinicians and researchers who aspire to pursue a similar career path.

 

EYRC Training Program: 5th interview, with Professor Márta Korbonits

On behalf of the EYRC, Dr. Pedro Marques interviewed Professor Márta Korbonits during the European Congress of Endocrinology (ECE), 13-16 May 2023, in Istanbul. Márta Korbonits is Professor of Endocrinology at the William Harvey Research Institute, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, with extensive expertise in pituitary diseases, most notably in the pathogenesis and genetics of pituitary tumours. Prof. Korbonits is also the president of the UK Society for Endocrinology (SfE), https://rb.gy/fvim7. The interview started with Prof. Korbonits telling us about some of the latest advances in the pathogenesis of pituitary tumours, as well as the current main challenges and future prospects. Then, Prof. Korbonits discussed the role of somatostatin analogues in acromegaly-associated headache, sharing with us some of the insights from a recent UK-based collaborative work coordinated by Professor John Wass, and also highlighting that this topic is still very much unknown (see the paper published in Endocrine-Related Cancer related to this work at https://rb.gy/ujwin). In the last part of the interview, Prof. Korbonits provided key tips and advice to young and early career scientists and physicians in terms of how to become a successful leader in the field of neuroendocrinology and how to balance work-personal life. Some of the key points are: i) love your topic; ii) be in the right setting; iii) collaborate; and iv) have good family support. It was a great privilege interviewing Prof. Márta Korbonits, and we hope that this interview helps you expand further your knowledge in pituitary diseases, and developing your career if you are a young researcher or an early career clinician!

EYRC Training Program: 4th interview, with Professor Albert Beckers, president of ENEA

On behalf of EYRC, our coordinator Dr Giampaolo Trivellin interviewed Professor Albert Beckers, the President of ENEA and Emeritus Full Professor at the University of Liège, Belgium. For more than 15 years, Prof. Beckers was the Head of the Service of Endocrinology at the University Hospital Centre of Liège. Prof. Beckers discussed his long career studying pituitary gigantism, highlighting key findings along the way. He then told us what he enjoyed the most and at the same time found challenging during his research and clinical activities. He concluded giving great advice for young neuroendocrinologists! EYRC Training Program: 3rd interview, with Professor Davide Carvalho

On behalf of EYRC, Dr. Pedro Marques interviewed Prof. Davide Carvalho during the XI Advanced Course of Endocrinology in Porto, Portugal. Prof. Davide Carvalho is a Consultant Endocrinologist and an Associate Professor of Endocrinology at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto (FMUP) and at Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João (Portugal), where he had been the Head of the Endocrine department for many years. Prof. Carvalho has taken several major positions at national and international societies and institutions, and recently, he has been nominated as President-Elect of ENEA. We started this interview by exploring ways that ENEA can support and help early-career clinicians and researchers with interest in Neuroendocrinology. Prof. Carvalho emphasized that young clinicians and researchers are the future of ENEA and a source of innovation in research and in care, and thus deserve all the support that the society can offer, such as research initiatives, for instance by sharing existing databases from previously published studies. Then, he summarized for us the main highlights in terms of efficacy and safety of osilodrostat for the treatment of Cushing’s syndrome, after which he also further discussed various management challenges in Cushing’s syndrome. At the end, Prof. Carvalho’s shared career-related advice to researchers and clinicians pursuing a career in Neuroendocrinology. He told us to focus on a topic and to avoid dispersing our attention into too many different things, in order to achieve high quality and relevant research outcomes, and also to find a “work-family equilibrium” in our lives. It was a pleasure interviewing Professor Davide Carvalho, and we hope that his insights will help inspiring young researchers and clinicians in building their knowledge and careers in Neuroendocrinology!

 

EYRC Training Program: 2nd interview, with Professor John Newell-Price

Dr. Mario Detomas on behalf of EYRC interviewed Professor John Newell-Price, one of the major experts in the field of neuroendocrinology – and in particular of Cushing syndrome – worldwide. John Newell-Price is Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Sheffield, UK and is Honorary Consultant Endocrinologist and Head of the Endocrinology service at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he is also Head of the Sheffield ENETS European Centre of Excellence for Neuroendocrine Tumors. He was recently elected as 2024-2025 President of the Endocrine Society, the first European-based endocrinologist to achieve that honour! Together with him, we discussed about the importance of changing the name “diabetes insipidus” to “arginine vasopressin deficiency” or “arginine vasopressin resistance” depending on the type. As you will hear, this is particularly important for patients’ care. Moreover, he gave important advice career-wise for young endocrinologists and researchers. It was a privilege interviewing Prof. Newell-Price and hear his valuable insights!

EYRC Training Program: 1st interview with Professor Maria Fleseriu

Dr. Pedro Marques on behalf of EYRC interviewed Professor Maria Fleseriu during the Annual Portuguese Congress of Endocrinology that took place on 2-5 February 2023 in Vilamoura, Portugal. Prof. Maria Fleseriu is the Director of the Pituitary Center at Oregon Health & Science University (Portland, Oregon, USA) and, as we all know, a leading expert in pituitary diseases. In this interview, Prof. Fleseriu started by telling us the major challenges and controversies in the field of silent pituitary adenomas, and how these may impact patient care as well as clinical and basic research in the future. Then, she summarized the main highlights and take-home messages from her recent review on acromegaly published in Lancet Diabetology Endocrinology in 2022, and also the main ideas and concerns of the authors while structuring and writing this paper in order to make it the most useful and relevant for clinicians worldwide (check it out on: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36209758/).

The last part of the interview was directed to young and early career scientists and physicians. Prof. Fleseriu shared with us key elements in building-up her brilliant career (hard-work and great focus are definitely 2 of them!), as well as wise advice to young researchers and clinicians in pursuing a career in Neuroendocrinology and get results, where finding a mentor and establishing a bilateral and respectful relationship is crucial! Prof. Fleseriu also spoke to us about challenges in terms of balancing clinical-research/academic duties, as well as in work-life balance, where organization is key! It was a privilege interviewing Prof. Maria Fleseriu, and we hope that her messages and insights expand further our knowledge of pituitary diseases and, more importantly, help and inspire young researchers and clinicians in building-up their careers in Neuroendocrinology!
